Day 2 and 3 of the Women in Fire conference - I was able to pick my classes and topics and it was difficult to narrow them down and once I did it seemed that all the ones that interested me were all the same day or time. Of course
I am not sure how to condense what I learned and make it make sense to you but i will do my best to recap... It was a common theme amongst all the speakers to uplift each other - cut the negativity out - Negativity is a cancer and we need to get it out of the fire service! We are a family and we need to get back to behaving accordingly. I learned more about hose advancement and different ways / methods that women can advance the line with greater precision. I studied emotional intelligence and revisited the importance of "knowing your why". Simon Sinek has a book I have read on the subject and to think of it from a fire service perspective it means to know and remember your WHY because on the hard days, the days you want to quit - you think about your why and that's what gets you through. I also sat in a class where we were challenged to think about differences and how to incorporate them, how to include others rather then exclude them because "they don't do things like I do". I sat in a class and revisited some very important information about the RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) I have physically practiced this training many times but this was in a class session and it was a sobering reminder of why we train, train, train and never stop training. I also took several classes on the subject of Leadership. It was enlightening to discover our own leadership style and be reminded to not live in the space where I believe I have nothing to offer.
