The Michigan House voted to approve funding for two Barry County recreation projects recommended by the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund.
“Barry County is beautiful, as anyone who has spent time on the Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail or at the state game area knows well,” Rep. Julie Calley (R-Portland) said, according to Michigan House Republicans. “They will become even better attractions with these enhancements.”
To extend the Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail in Thornapple Township, the Legislature has allocated $350,000. This will involve acquiring 26 acres and connecting the north end of the trail in Barry County to the south end of Kent County's system.
Funds of $200,000 have also been allocated to build a new shooting range at the Barry State Game Area, allowing the Department of Natural Resources to close an existing location.
The House measure approves $28.7 million for 60 recreational development projects and 18 land acquisition projects.
The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund is built by the development of minerals on state land, not general tax dollars. The state constitution says funds must be used for acquisition or recreational development projects.
