COMMITTEE TO ELECT BARTHOLOMEW JAMES LOWER: Rep. Meerman unveils plan to urge governor to be more transparent when making COVID-19 decisions.

COMMITTEE TO ELECT BARTHOLOMEW JAMES LOWER issued the following announcement May 20.

State Rep. Luke Meerman today unveiled legislation that will urge Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to share data used for making decisions related to coronavirus with the Legislature.

Meerman’s measure calls on the governor to share information about the virus with the public, encourage medical professionals to provide elective medical procedures, and encourage the people of Michigan to continue to practice safe social distancing.

“We must work together during this time of crisis,” Meerman said. “Sharing this valuable information with the Legislature is a must. As state legislators, we are honored with the duty to represent the voices of Michiganders throughout the state – and it is only right that we are given complete transparency during this pandemic.”

Some examples of the data Meerman wants the governor to share include:

The daily number of available hospital beds occupied by patients since Jan. 1, 2020, the daily number of available hospital beds occupied by confirmed COVID-19 patients since Jan. 1, 2020, the daily number of emergency room visits in total and the daily number of emergency room visits by patients testing positive for COVID-19 since Jan. 1, 2020, the daily number of confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations and confirmed COVID-19 deaths that are related to retirement homes or nursing homes since Jan. 1, 2020, and the daily number of confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations and confirmed COVID-19 deaths of individuals who have had other pre-existing or underlying health conditions since Jan. 1, 2020.

Meerman will formally introduce the plan next week.
