Michigan State Representative Rachelle M. Smit (R-Hastings) has released explanations for her recent votes in the state legislature during the week of July 24.

On House Bill 4141, which would require schools to implement a wireless communication device policy and set minimum standards for such policies, Smit voted in favor. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Tisdel (R) but failed to pass with a vote of 53-45. Explaining her support, Smit stated: "School employees, especially principals, are asking for a state law to improve enforcement of restricting cell phone use by students."

Smit also voted yes on House Bill 4506. This bill sought to amend the resentencing process ordered by the Michigan Supreme Court for individuals convicted of murder at ages 19 or 20. The legislation would have allowed prosecuting attorneys more time to request life without parole sentences and increased possible penalties during resentencing hearings. Sponsored by Rep. Lightner (R), this bill also failed, with a vote of 55-43. Smit explained her position: "Proponents of the bill may argue that persons who are 18, 19, and 20 years old are legal adults, and their culpability for committing a murder can be treated as greater than a person under age 18, while still being less than a person who is older than 21 years old."

Both bills addressed issues relevant to schools and criminal justice procedures in Michigan.
