State Representative Gina Johnsen has called for action following the arrest of a Chinese national at the University of Michigan. The individual was apprehended by federal authorities for allegedly attempting to smuggle a biological pathogen into the United States.
Johnsen expressed her concerns in a statement, highlighting the potential threat posed by foreign entities. "This alarming case is further proof that the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party is not theoretical — it’s real, it’s growing, and it’s targeting our nation from within," she stated. She also praised federal officials for preventing what she described as a potential act of agricultural terrorism.
The representative emphasized the need for vigilance against such threats and urged state-level action to complement federal efforts. "While this attempt was stopped, it raises serious questions about how many other dangerous agents and materials are slipping through the cracks," Johnsen noted.
She called on Michigan's Senate to expedite legislation aimed at curbing foreign influence in critical sectors such as farmland and research institutions. "The Senate must act swiftly on our bipartisan package to crack down on foreign influence and safeguard our farmland, research institutions, and critical infrastructure," she said.
Johnsen has been instrumental in promoting legislation designed to restrict land purchases by foreign adversaries in Michigan and enhance oversight of foreign actors within the state. This legislative package has already passed in the House with bipartisan support but awaits Senate consideration.
