State Rep. Gina Johnsen | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Gina Johnsen, a Republican from Portland, expressed concerns about the state of Michigan's finances following Governor Gretchen Whitmer's State of the State address. Whitmer highlighted the state's financial achievements, yet residents are experiencing rising costs in groceries and energy. The governor has proposed a $1 billion increase in spending compared to last year and suggested new taxes to support her roads plan.
Johnsen criticized Whitmer's remarks on the state's financial health. She stated, "Only our governor could claim our state’s ‘financial house is in order’ while simultaneously admitting that families are struggling with inflation." Johnsen pointed out that despite having $2.7 billion in rainy-day funds, many people find it difficult to afford basic necessities like groceries.
Johnsen emphasized the financial challenges faced by young parents who must choose between their health and essential items for their children. She questioned how individuals can afford healthy food when they struggle with paying energy bills.
House Republicans aim to reduce the state budget and return tax dollars to citizens. Johnsen urged collaboration with the governor for improving residents' financial situations: “If the governor truly cares about the financial health of our state, she’ll partner with us to ensure residents are just as financially sound as state government.”
