State Representative Gina Johnsen from Lake Odessa expressed her concerns following the arrest of an illegal immigrant charged with the fatal shooting of a woman in Grand Rapids.

In her statement, Rep. Johnsen extended condolences to the victim's family and highlighted what she sees as a need for improved border security measures in the United States. "My heart goes out to the family of the young victim killed in this tragic, senseless shooting," she said. She emphasized that this incident "underscores the urgent need for strengthened U.S. border control measures that ensure the safety and security of communities throughout the country, including right here in West Michigan."

Rep. Johnsen criticized current border patrol practices, stating, "We cannot continue to pretend that there are no consequences when we do not properly patrol our borders and screen those who enter them." She believes that insufficient oversight threatens public safety and called for decisive federal action. "That sense of comfort will soon be a thing of the past, however, if the federal government does not take decisive action to secure our borders against bad actors," she added.

The representative urged enforcement of commonsense immigration laws to prevent future tragedies like this one from occurring again.
