Enrollment at Portland Public Schools decreased by 1.1% compared to previous school year

There were 2,036 students enrolled in Portland Public Schools in the 2022-23 school year, 1.1% less than the previous year, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 50% of them were girls, and 50% were boys.

Data also shows that most of the students were white, representing 92.1% of the Portland Public Schools total enrollment.

Portland Public Schools covers four schools within Ionia County with its main office in Portland. Among them, Portland High School recorded the highest enrollment of 702 students in the 2022-23 school year.

Overall student enrollment in Michigan remains below pre-pandemic levels, white students experiencing the largest decline at 6.5%.

Academic performance has also suffered, with the state's average NAEP score dropping by 6.5 points and ethnic achievement gaps widening. Black and Hispanic students' average math proficiency dropped by 7% in 2022, to 13.5% and 28.2%, respectively.
