The Lowell Charter Township Board has approved a ballot proposal for the Aug. 2, 2022

Approved

Looking Ahead; The Lowell Charter Township Board has approved a ballot proposal for the Aug. 2, 2022 election that, if approved, would provide funding for fire and emergency services for the growing Township. Why the ask?

A growing community.

5.5% increase in population to 6,276 residents 28% increase in 911 calls from 2020 to 2021 (an 8% increase over previous record year)

Rising costs.

40% cost increase for services contracted by Lowell Area Fire and Emergency Services Authority and Bowne Township Fire Department (since 2019).

An understaffed Authority.

The Authority needs another firefighter/EMT, and the Township is required to pay our share of a needed fire truck, costing more than $223,300.

The need for a sustainable funding source.

The Township needs to create a sustainable funding source for fire and emergency services. If approved, the millage would free up the Township's general fund for other priorities.

What is the millage ask?

One mill for eight years to support fire and emergency services, which will raise $282,900 annually. How does the math work?

1 mill = 1/1000 of a dollar, or $0.001 cents

EXAMPLE:  A home with $100,000 taxable value would pay $100 per year. If approved, how will millage dollars be used?  Provide sustainable funding for fire and emergency services. Allow the Township to focus more of our general fund on resident priorities, such as paving and maintaining roads.

Free up dollars for Township maintenance of parks, trails and cemeteries.
