Lowell Area Fire Department issued the following announcement on Apr 13.
Aren't these trucks beautiful? These beauties are fun to drive but they come with a great deal of responsibility as well. We have drivers training during fire school and then must complete 10 hours on each apparatus as well prior to being able to drive emergent to a scene. We are responsible to take care of the truck, equipment and the personnel on board. We must constantly monitor and reduce the amount of risk and exposure to potential losses during each and every response. We have procedures that must be followed by each and every firefighter. Prior to entering the cab and starting the vehicle we must complete a circle of safety around the vehicle to see that all 4 sides are visually inspected and cleared. We practice backing and learn about uncontrolled and controlled intersections, non-emergency response and ordinary travel procedures. We continue to train every year by completing a closed road drivers training course with our entire department. We also have to keep our privately owned vehicles in strict adherence to motor vehicle laws. There is always something to train on!!
