Lakewood Public Schools issued the following announcement on Sept 14.

Mrs. Spitzley Serves Up Success wit Math and Digraphs

Lakewood Elementary School

A lot of learning is going on in Mrs. Spitzley’s 1st grade class at Lakewood Elementary School.  Her students are working on math and practicing numbers, while others were dialed in on their Accelerated Reader Quiz.  Next, all students transitioned to learning about digraphs.  The concept of digraphs may “sound” complicated, except when Mrs. Spitzley is your teacher. Simply put, a digraph is a pair of characters used together to represent a single sound.  Her students understand this concept because she explained that “digraph” is a fancy word for “H Brother.”  She began with the word “that.” “How does it feel when we say the word “that?”  She asked her students to place their fingers on the sides of the throat and in unison say the word “that.” “Can you feel the vibration?  Your voice is turned on when you recite the word “that.”  Using the same exercise, she asked her students to say the word “thin.”  “Can you feel the vibration?”  A collective “No!” came in response. A skilled educator has an assortment of teaching strategies, classroom techniques, and magical methods to provide instruction that accommodates all learning styles.  Mrs. Spitzley is a pro who innately serves up high quality teaching and learning so that her students will be prepared for nothing less than success.
