The City of Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on Oct. 26.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced Friday that the City of Grand Rapids has been selected as one of the three nationwide recipients of the Water Infrastructure Improvements for its Nation Act grant. The $5.1 million grant will help fund the replacement of lead service lines in the City’s Neighborhoods of Focus and support public engagement on the risks of lead in drinking water – goals outlined in the City Strategic Plan.
“The announcement is a tremendous step forward for Grand Rapids and our residents in the process to eliminate all lead water services in our system while being fiscally responsible,” said Wayne Jernberg, water system manager. “We continue to be proactive in ensuring the safety of our public water supply. Our customers should be confident in the high-quality water we provide them every day.”
Since 2017, the City has replaced over 1,500 lead service lines during construction projects and through emergency leak replacements. The grant will help fund an additional 1,700 lead service line replacements in the coming years – in addition to the 603 replacements that are currently planned in the City’s FY 2021 budget.
