A group of community partners is working to have any residents of Grand Rapids who have not completed the 2020 U.S. Census respond by the Wednesday, Sept. 30, deadline.
The City of Grand Rapids website said $470 million hangs in the balance as the Census count reaches its final days. Approximately 26,000 Grand Rapids residents have not yet submitted their forms.
“We’re in the homestretch of the Census, and there is a profound sense of urgency since our community will lose nearly a half-billion dollars if we don’t get everyone counted,” Lou Canfield, Complete Count Committee liaison, said, according to the City of Grand Rapids website. “We’re running out of time, so we need all hands on deck to ensure we get a complete count.”
Canfield’s committee visited Grand Rapids’ undercounted areas on the city’s southwest and southeast sides on Sept. 12 and plans to do so again on Sept. 19.
Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on that day to encourage people to fill out the Census. Interested individuals should sign up here.
