Rep. Julie Calley (R-Portland) offered an update for contractors and gig employees, informing them that their delayed applications are now available to file for unemployment insurance.

On Facebook, Calley told Michigan residents on April 6 that self-employed and gig workers can access unemployment insurance applications. As of April 13, these workers can now file for unemployment insurance.

"Michigan’s self-employed workers, gig workers, 1099 independent contractors and low-wage workers affected by COVID-19 may apply for federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance beginning Monday, April 13, at 8 a.m.," Calley wrote on Facebook.

She said that the U.S. Department of Labor guides how states should assist those seeking unemployment benefits.

"It appears that self-employed Michiganders, gig employees and independent contractors will need to self-certify that they’re not working because of COVID-19-related reasons," Calley wrote on Facebook. "Their unemployment benefits will be based on previously filed taxes. I anticipate hearing more later this week, and I will share it as soon as I do."

Low-wage workers and 1099 independent contractors will be able to apply, along with self-employed and gig workers, Calley said on Facebook. She also told residents not to reapply for benefits if they have already filed a claim. If these specific workers previously applied and were denied, there are next steps to follow.

They should "log in to their MiWAM account to complete the next steps for PUA federal benefits," Calley wrote on Facebook. "These steps will also be emailed to workers. Do not file a new claim, as that may delay the time it takes to get benefits."

If workers haven't previously applied, online is the fastest and easiest method to do so.

Gig workers, contractors and other self-employed residents must follow the filing schedule issued when applying for benefits, which sets certain days for them to apply based on their last names, according to Michigan.gov. View this press release for more information on the filing schedule.
