Rep. Rendon bill honoring fallen hero advances through Michigan House

A bill proposed by state Rep. Daire Rendon to rename the interchange at Highway I-75 and Cook Road in West Branch as the “PFC Kenneth Coates Memorial Interchange” today was overwhelmingly approved in a vote by the Michigan House.

Army Private First Class Kenneth Coates served during the Vietnam War and was killed in action Feb. 5th, 1968. He is buried at Brookside Cemetery in West Branch and is survived by siblings and extended family.

“Private Coates made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting to uphold America’s ideals abroad. That sacrifice must never be forgotten,” said Rendon, of Lake City. “Our brave men and women in our armed forces work every day to keep us safe and protect our freedoms. I’m honored to have this stretch of road named after one of our bravest in Northern Michigan.”

The Michigan Memorial Highway Act was enacted in 2001 and allows for the naming of bridges and highways within the state. House Bill 4611 advances to the Senate for further consideration.
