State Representative Gina Johnsen expressed her support for newly agreed-upon legislation aimed at assisting small businesses and tipped workers. The measures are set to prevent the implementation of mandates that could lead to business closures and job losses.
Johnsen stated, “We knew we wouldn’t get everything we wanted from Senate Democrats, and there are portions of these plans that I’m not a fan of, but when you consider the alternative – chaotic shutdowns and layoffs – the compromise today is clearly the best option.”
She emphasized the potential negative impacts without this legislation: “Without the legislation we passed this week, tipped workers – many of whom rely on that income to support their families – would’ve been out of a job. Small business owners who have worked in our state for decades could’ve had to close their doors and potentially even move out of state to conduct ongoing business. Our plan may not be perfect, but I’m glad we could stop the damage that was coming.”
House Bill 4002 ensures access to sick time for all workers while simplifying previously complex rules. It allows businesses flexibility in choosing suitable sick time plans and establishing policies for “no call, no show” incidents. Additionally, it offers protection against unwarranted lawsuits.
Senate Bill 8 aims to safeguard tipped workers by maintaining the tip credit at 38% through 2025 with planned annual wage increases until it reaches 50% of the minimum wage by 2031. The bill also introduces stricter penalties for employers who do not adequately compensate their employees.
