State Rep. Gina Johnsen has introduced legislation that would allow individuals with valid concealed pistol licenses to carry concealed firearms within the Michigan State Capitol Building.
“This legislation reinforces the rights of lawful gun owners and ensures state agencies cannot arbitrarily restrict concealed carry in the people’s building,” said Johnsen, R-Portland. “It respects the Constitution while maintaining clear protocols for safety and accountability.”
The proposed bill seeks to amend the Michigan State Capitol Historic Site Act, making it clear that the Capitol Commission would not have authority to prohibit lawful concealed carrying inside the Capitol. Under this proposal, those with permits issued by Michigan or any other state could be asked by security or legislative sergeants to present their license, but they could not be denied their right to carry.
Johnsen’s move follows an incident involving rock musician Ted Nugent, who carried a concealed firearm into the Capitol last month. The event brought attention to how security rules are enforced and whether they are transparent for those holding legal permits.
“We should never have to leave our constitutional rights at the door — especially at the door of what’s supposed to be the people’s house,” Johnsen said. “This bill ensures that law-abiding CPL holders are treated fairly and consistently, without conflicting rules or selective enforcement clouding their rights. I’m proud to introduce legislation that rights that wrong and safeguards our God-given right to defend ourselves if necessary.”
