State Representative Gina Johnsen, a Republican from Portland, cast her vote in favor of legislative plans aimed at supporting local job providers and their employees amid concerns about Michigan’s tipped wage laws and sick leave policies. The Michigan Supreme Court’s decision to phase out the tip credit and introduce mandates for sick leave and wages is set to take effect on February 21. This ruling could potentially lead businesses to lay off staff, reduce employee hours, or shut down.
Republican House Bills 4001 and 4002 aim to balance economic growth with the protection of livelihoods while preventing widespread business closures. “We promised employees and job providers that we would listen to their concerns and bring forward a solution that works for everyone,” Johnsen stated. She highlighted the opposition from tipped wage earners and small business owners against the court ruling, emphasizing its potential negative impact on their livelihoods.
The proposed bills seek to preserve tipped wages, gradually increase the minimum wage, and maintain current earned sick leave policies. They also aim to protect small businesses with limited staff from being adversely affected by unexpected sick leave requests.
Despite bipartisan support for reform, House Democrats did not address these issues in the previous legislative term. The bills have now received strong bipartisan backing and will proceed to the state Senate for further deliberation.
